Very useful information, I enjoyed reading it. Do you build your own equipment from scratch and if so what components do you use? What was the reason for not connecting the shield to the chassis of a dimmer?

Started in stage work in high school in 1994. Worked professionally in Duluth, MN, USA including local opera and for Ice Capades when in Duluth. Now doing lighting for our church services and for Christmas Musicale and Patriotic Musicale each year. Our church just moved into our new complex with a 1000 seat auditorium. We now have a lighting cove with 64 plugs spread across connected to a Strand 96 channel rack which also controls the house lights.

I'm glad you could shed some light (pun intended) on the mystries of DMX-512. I couldn't get much info from my theatre lighting supplier. They didn't have much. What's the big secret???? RS-485 has been around in the industrial world for years and the roticol should be available to all who wish it. The IBM syndrom of the stage lighting world. Just one comment about the website. Loose all the blinking (profanity not intended) icons. They cause too many interupt requests on the receiving computer, making the movement of the cursor difficult and inefficent. Chuck

Came to your site from Lanbox; found them by complete accident whilst at Versiontracker. Have been looking for Mac serial to DMX for a while, to control a (single) JEM/Martin hydrosonic haze generator we use with our windtunnels to provide laser scatter.. no gigs here! Looks like a Lanbox LCL will do my job...with about 244 channels to spare...! Please let me know if this would be the wrong choice- is there a better choice RS232/422 to DMX convertor- with perhaps fewer channels? Or even better, a multidrop485 to DMX- we already have a 485 network all around the lab... Many thanks if you want to reply, and a really useful site anyway- now I (at last) know how DMX works...!
